Overview

Abscess drainage is a medical procedure performed to remove pus from a localized infection that has formed a pocket in the body's tissues. Infections, inflammatory bowel disease, perforations, or problems after surgery can all cause abscesses to form in the stomach and intestines. In more complicated cases, the procedure can be performed via surgical drainage or a minimally invasive percutaneous approach guided by ultrasound or CT imaging. The main goal is to remove the infected fluid, reduce pain and swelling, and prevent the infection from spreading to nearby tissues or the bloodstream.

Why It's Done
When antibiotics alone aren't enough to treat an infection, abscess drainage is done. An untreated abscess can enlarge, cause severe pain, and lead to serious complications such as sepsis. Drainage removes the infected material right away, helping the body heal faster. When patients have a fever, ongoing abdominal pain, or signs of a systemic infection, it is especially important.

What to Expect?
Imaging tests, such as an ultrasound or a CT scan, are performed before the procedure to locate the abscess and determine its size. You might need blood tests to check for infection and to assess how well your blood clots. Local anaesthesia and sedation are given during percutaneous drainage. A small incision is made, and a needle or catheter is inserted into the abscess while the doctor monitors it on an imaging machine. The pus is drained, and in some cases, a small tube is left in place to continue draining for a few days. A bigger cut may be needed for surgical drainage if the person is under general anaesthesia. Patients are watched for signs of improvement after the procedure. People usually keep taking antibiotics to clear any remaining infection.

Recovery & Outlook
How long it takes to heal depends on the size and location of the abscess. After drainage, pain usually gets better quickly. Most people get better with the right antibiotics and follow-up care. Getting treatment early greatly lowers the risk of complications and helps the body heal completely.
