Overview
Cardiac CT angiography (CTA) is an imaging test that doesn't require surgery and shows the coronary arteries, the blood vessels that supply the heart. It uses a CT scan and contrast dye to make clear, three-dimensional pictures of the heart and blood vessels. CTA is performed from the outside, making it faster and less invasive than traditional angiography. It is especially helpful for detecting arterial blockages or narrowing and for evaluating the overall structure of the coronary arteries. The test provides doctors with high-resolution images that help them assess heart health with high accuracy.
Why it's Done?
Cardiac CT angiography is recommended when you need to check the coronary arteries but don't want to undergo invasive procedures. People who have chest pain, think they might have coronary artery disease, or whose other test results are unclear often use cardiac CT angiography. It could also be used to monitor people with diabetes, high cholesterol, or a family history of heart disease. Sometimes it helps rule out serious blockages, giving people peace of mind and preventing unnecessary invasive tests. If any problems are found, it can also be used to plan more treatment.
What to Expect?
Patients may be given medicine to slow their heart rate before the scan. This helps make the images clearer. A line is placed in the arm during the procedure to inject contrast dye, which makes the coronary arteries stand out. The patient lies on a CT table that moves through the scanner as images are acquired. The scan only takes a few minutes, but getting ready for it might take longer. Patients are asked to hold their breath briefly while the image is being taken to prevent movement. Some people may feel warm when the contrast is injected. Most of the time, the whole process goes quickly and is easy to handle.
Outlook and Recovery
The recovery process begins immediately, and patients can return to their normal activities soon after the scan. Drinking fluids is usually a good idea to help the body eliminate the contrast dye. Cardiac CT angiography is a useful diagnostic tool that can detect coronary artery disease early, helping doctors make appropriate treatment decisions in a timely manner.
