Kidney Stone Procedures

Overview

Kidney stone procedures are medical procedures that remove or break up stones that form in the kidneys or the urinary tract. Minerals and salts in urine can crystallise and form stones, which can cause severe pain or blockages. The size, location, and kind of stone will determine how it is treated. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy, and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) are all common procedures. ESWL uses sound waves to break stones into smaller pieces that can pass naturally. Ureteroscopy is a procedure in which a thin scope is put through the urinary tract to break up or remove stones. PCNL is a type of surgery that is not very invasive and is used for bigger or more complicated stones.

Why It's Done
When stones cause severe pain, block the flow of urine, lead to an infection, bleed, or don't pass on their own, kidney stone procedures are performed. If you don't treat them, big stones can hurt your kidneys. The goal is to ease symptoms, get urine flowing again, prevent problems, and lower the risk of kidney damage.

What to Expect?
Before treatment, imaging tests such as ultrasound, CT scan, or X-ray are used to determine where the stone is and how large it is. Tests of blood and urine check how well the kidneys are working and how likely you are to have an infection. The patient lies on a table during ESWL while shock waves are aimed at the stone to break it up. Ureteroscopy is done while the patient is asleep. A thin scope is put through the urethra and bladder into the ureter to break up or remove the stone with a laser. To reach and remove larger stones, PCNL requires a small incision in the back. The procedure can take anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours. Afterwards, patients may feel some pain, see blood in their urine, or have a temporary stent placed to ensure the drainage works properly.

Recovery & Outlook
The type of procedure determines how long recovery takes. Many patients return to their normal lives within a few days. Drinking enough water and making dietary changes can help prevent the problem from coming back. Kidney stone procedures work very well, restore urinary function, and protect kidney health in the long term.
