Port Implantation (Chemo Port)

Overview

Port implantation, also called chemo port placement, is a minor surgical procedure in which a small medical device is placed under the skin to provide long-term access to veins. The port has a small reservoir and a thin catheter that enters a large vein, usually in the chest. It is mostly used for people who need repeated intravenous treatments like chemotherapy, immunotherapy, blood transfusions, or long-term medications. The port makes it easy and safe to reach the bloodstream and reduces the number of times you have to stick a needle into a vein. It is made to stay in place for months or even years if necessary.

Why It's Done
A chemo port is put in to make it safer and more comfortable to get IV treatments often. Getting IV access through the veins in your arms over and over can hurt, damage the veins, and make you feel bad. Some chemotherapy drugs can also make small veins hurt. A port gives you stable access to a large central vein, which reduces the risk of complications and speeds treatment. It is suggested for patients receiving extended cancer treatment.

What to Expect?
Before putting in the port, blood tests are done to check how well the blood clots, and imaging may be done to find the right veins. Most of the time, the procedure is done with local anaesthesia and sedation. A small incision is made near the collarbone to insert the catheter into a large vein, usually the superior vena cava. Under the skin, another small pocket is made for the port reservoir. The incisions are closed with stitches, and the catheter is connected to the port. The procedure usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes. A chest X-ray confirms the correct placement after it is performed. There may be some mild pain or swelling at the site for a short time. The port is usually ready to use in a few days.

Recovery & Outlook
Most patients get back to their normal lives within a few days, and recovery is quick. If you take care of the port and flush it regularly, it won't get infected or blocked. A chemo port makes treatment more comfortable and easier, which helps cancer therapy work safely and effectively over the long term.
