Overview
A renal biopsy is a test that removes a small piece of kidney tissue so doctors can examine it under a microscope. It is done to find out what is causing kidney problems that can't be explained, such as protein in the urine that won't go away, blood in the urine, or worsening kidney function. A percutaneous renal biopsy is the most common method. It involves inserting a thin needle through the skin and into the kidney using ultrasound or CT guidance. If there is a high risk of bleeding, a transjugular or surgical biopsy may be done in some cases. The tissue sample helps doctors determine what caused the kidney disease and the best treatment plan.
Why It's Done
A renal biopsy is done to find out what is wrong with the kidneys, such as glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, autoimmune kidney diseases, or sudden kidney damage that can't be explained. It also helps determine how severe chronic kidney disease is and monitor transplanted kidneys for signs of rejection. The biopsy results help doctors decide how to treat the disease and make it easier to manage.
What to Expect?
Before the biopsy, patients have blood tests to assess how well their blood clots and their overall health. Doctors use imaging tests to locate the kidneys and determine the safest approach to reach them. Before the procedure, patients may be told to stop taking blood-thinning drugs. Local anaesthesia is given to numb the skin and deeper tissues during the biopsy. The needle is guided into the kidney by real-time imaging while the patient lies on their stomach. A few small pieces of tissue are taken. The process usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes. After that, patients are watched for a few hours to see if they are bleeding or in pain. They keep a close eye on your blood pressure and urine output, and they usually suggest that you stay in bed for a short time.
Recovery & Outlook
It is common to experience mild pain at the biopsy site, which usually resolves in a few days. Most people go back to their normal lives within a week. A renal biopsy is a safe and useful test that provides doctors with important information to deliver the right treatment and improve kidney health.
