Overview

The department of Cardiac Surgery at Lilavati Hospital, Gujarat, treats diseases of the heart and major blood vessels. It includes surgeries to fix blocked arteries, fix or replace broken heart valves, and fix structural problems with the heart. Most heart surgeries are performed in specialized operating rooms equipped with advanced monitoring and support systems. For example, heart-lung machines temporarily take over circulation during the surgery. Some surgeries are still done the old-fashioned way, with open-heart surgery. However, new techniques allow some procedures to be done with minimal incisions. The goal is to safely and effectively restore normal heart function and blood flow.

When medications or minimally invasive procedures can't help with heart problems, patients are referred to cardiac surgeons. Some common causes are severe coronary artery disease, valve problems, congenital heart defects, or problems that happen after a heart attack. Persistent chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, or reduced exercise tolerance are among the symptoms that often prompt further testing. In some cases, surgery is planned based on test results even before symptoms worsen. This is especially true if there is a chance that heart function will get worse.

There are many different types of heart surgery. Some of these are coronary artery disease treated with bypass surgery (CABG), heart valve diseases that need to be fixed or replaced, and congenital heart defects that are present at birth. It also includes treating aortic diseases, such as aneurysms and dissections. Other procedures may involve removing tumors from the heart or repairing structural problems. Some patients also have multiple procedures done at the same time when they have multiple problems. The type of surgery best for a patient depends on their condition, how severe it is, and their overall health.

With better surgical techniques, anesthesia, and postoperative care, the results of heart surgery have gotten a lot better. After surgery, many patients feel better, and their hearts work better. It can take several weeks to recover, and cardiac rehabilitation programs can help. With the right follow-up, medication, and lifestyle changes, patients usually achieve very good long-term results, allowing them to live active lives again.

Atherosclerosis is a disease in which fatty deposits, made up of cholesterol, fats, and other substances, build up on the inside walls of arteries....... Read More

Atrial fibrillation is a common heart rhythm problem in which the atria, or upper chambers of the heart, beat quickly and unevenly. The heartbeat stops being steady and coordinated and becomes uneven, sometimes even fast...... Read More

Cardiac arrest is a sudden and dangerous condition in which the heart stops pumping blood properly....... Read More

Cardiac conduction disorders are problems with the heart's electrical system, which controls the heart's rhythm....... Read More

Cardiomyopathy is a disease that affects the heart muscle, making it harder for the heart to pump blood. The muscle may not work properly and may become stretched, thickened, or stiff....... Read More

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is when the heart has problems with its structure that are present from birth....... Read More

Coronary artery disease (CAD) occurs when the blood vessels that supply the heart with blood become narrowed or blocked. This happens slowly over time because fatty deposits build up on the inside walls of the arteries....... Read More

Dilated cardiomyopathy is a condition in which the left ventricle, the heart's main pumping chamber, becomes enlarged and stretched. The muscle gets thinner and weaker as it gets bigger, so it can't pump blood as well as it should....... Read More

A heart attack, also called a myocardial infarction, happens when blood flow to a part of the heart suddenly stops....... Read More

Heart failure is when the heart can't pump blood as well as it should. It doesn't mean the heart has stopped working...... Read More

Arrhythmias, also known as heart rhythm disorders, are conditions in which the heart does not beat in a steady, regular way....... Read More

Heart valve disorders happen when one or more of the heart's valves don't work properly....... Read More

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a condition in which the pressure of blood flowing through the arteries remains higher than it should....... Read More

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a condition in which the heart muscle becomes too thick....... Read More

Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is a condition in which the heart muscle does not receive sufficient blood and oxygen due to the narrowing of the arteries that supply it....... Read More

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a condition that narrows the blood vessels that carry blood to the arms and legs, most often the legs....... Read More

Pulmonary hypertension occurs when the blood pressure in the lungs' arteries is higher than normal....... Read More
